Many people believe that the essential experience of awakening to the truth of yourself, or seeing through your identification with your body and identity, is liberation. This essential experience is actually the essential moment of awakening, which is just the beginning of a much deeper realization. True liberation is instead the complete annihilation of all egoic identification, which cannot be planned. It lives in the strong determination to be free and the willingness to walk through the fire of grace that burns through the very powerful egoic tendencies described by Ramana Maharshi as vasanas.

Believe it or not, your ego is the greatest ally for discovering the freedom and happiness that you are. Threading the needle is turning your attention to the source of the sense or feeling 'I am me,' which is the essence of your ego. In fact your ego originates from the single pronoun 'I' the primal thought and origin of what is known as ego. Once your turn your attention to the source of this 'I' inside of you, your ego transforms from a barrier into a gateway of freedom. Truly, if you want freedom the ego is your greatest ally.
